RRR vs Maidaan: Boney Kapoor questions, ‘Why a Rajamouli film, after Baahubali, needs a holiday weekend?’

The makers of RRR announced their release date a couple of days ago and sent social media into a frenzy. RRR is one of the most-awaited and ambitious projects by Baahubali director SS Rajamouli. It features an ensemble cast of N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan alongside Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Ajay Devgn, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, and Alison Doody in supporting roles. Just a couple of days ago, the makers announced that RRR will release on 13th October 2021. It will be then clashing with Boney Kapoor produced, Ajay Devgn starrer Maidaan which is scheduled to release on 15 October, coinciding with Dusshera. Now, Boney Kapoor seems to be very upset with Rajamouli on the date.

He opened about the same in an interview with ETimes. The producer feels that someone like SS Rajamouli who has released two magnificent films of the Baahubali franchise would bother with a holiday weekend. Boney Kapoor revealed that he had spoken to Ajay Devgn about the announcement. When asked about the De De Pyaar De actor's reaction, the producer said, "Ajay found out about it a day before the announcement was made. He told me that he had told the makers of 'RRR' that they should speak to me as I have already announced that 'Maidaan' would release on October 15. He asked them to sort out the situation but they chose not to speak to me. This is the reason why Ajay did not tweet or retweet the release date of 'RRR'."

When asked whether he contacted SS Rajamouli, Boney Kapoor said, "Yes, I did. I called him yesterday and he was busy shooting. But he returned my call." The producer added, "He said it was not in his hands because he had played no role in this and it is entirely between the 'RRR' producer and distributors. He said the producer was under a lot of pressure from the distributors." Asked about his take on Rajamouli's stance, Boney said, "I have no choice but to believe him."

Director Amit Sharma has helmed Maidaan and when asked whether he would shift the date of Maidaan's release, Boney said, "Amit Sharma, who's directing 'Maidaan', had last helmed the superhit 'Badhaai Ho' and the content of my film will speak for itself. The third week of October has Dussehra and Eid holidays and becomes a big weekend for overseas collections. So, no, I won't budge. I will leave it to fate." When asked about loads of pending releases likely to coincide with releases, the producer reasoned, "But Rajamouli has made a big name for himself after the two 'Baahubali' films he directed. In that context, I wonder why a Rajamouli film, after 'Baahubali: The Beginning' and 'Baahubali 2:The Conclusion' needs a holiday weekend?"

Boney Kapoor also revealed that Amit Sharma is miffed about the clash. Boney has now flown to Mumbai from Delhi and looking into the same. "I was in Delhi and have rushed to Mumbai to address the situation. I have to talk to my entire cast and crew; they're all upset," he said before signing off.
