"Hollywood keeps doing remakes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Cape Fear, Tarzan and Dracula keep getting remade. It also depends whether you've made a good or bade remake. And why do you want to compare? Govinda was a great actor, he did a great job. Now, there's Varun Dhawan, he also has good potential, is a very good actor, he's doing his job. Varun Dhawan is not saying, 'I'm Govinda.' He's Varun Dhawan. If Varun Dhawan says I'm copying Govinda and I'm like Govinda and now you judge if I'm doing it better than Govinda, then it makes sense, right? Varun Dhawan may be inspired from Govinda, but he's brining his own touch to it. So, don't compare it, that's wrong. If people think that's better (Govinda and Karisma Kapoor's Coolie No. 1) then that's fair enough, it's their choice," says Jaaved Jaaferi who is enacting the part played by Sadashiv Amrapurkar in Director David Dhawan's original 1995 Coolie No. 1 when asked about the comparisons being made between Varun Dhawan and Govinda and how the former as well as the remake is facing severe backlash for it from a section on social media.
In an exclusive interview with BollywoodLife, Jaaved Jaaferi opens up about stepping into the legendary Sadashiv Amrapurkar's shoes in Coolie No. 1, how David Dhawan steered the ship to present the film for today's audience, the backlash against the Coolie No. 1 remake, Varun Dhawan being compared with Govinda, nepotism playing no part in either his or his son, Meezaan's career, Subhash Ghai picking him for Meri Jung and shooting a major song on the villain, and how he later felt that he missed out on lead roles due to starting out as a villain and not managing his PR well.
