WTF Wednesday: FIR against KBC 12 and Amitabh Bachchan over Manusmriti controversy — can we now change history over religious sentiments?

How INSENSITIVE, INTOLERANT, and just plain ILLOGICAL are we turning into as a society? An FIR has been filed against the makers of Kaun Banega Crorepati and its host, Amitabh Bachchan. Okay, everyone has a right to file an FIR under the laws of our constitution. But why was this FIR filed, you may ask if you don't already know. Well, it was a question asked on the show by Big B to celebrity guests, social activist Bezwada Wilson and actor Anup Soni. All right, what was so offensive about this question? Now...here's where it gets RIDICULOUS.

During a recent episode of KBC 12, Amitabh Bachchan asked Bezwada Wilson and Anup Soni, "On 25 December 1927, Dr. BR Ambedkar and his followers burned copies of which scripture? The options are a.) Vishnu Purana, b.) Bhagavad Gita, c.) Rigdev and d.) Manusmriti." The question was for the prize money of Rs. 6,40,000. After the question was answered, Amitabh went on to elaborate, "In 1927, Dr. BR Ambedkar condemned the ancient Hindu text Manusmriti to ideologically justify caste discrimination and untouchability and he also burned copies of it," as is customary for him to provide some insight into the questions, especially for the ones entailing higher prize money.

Despite the fact that this is a legitimate part of Indian history and not made up by either the showrunners or the host, they've found themselves in trouble after an FIR was filed against them from Lucknow for hurting Hindu sentiments. Fine, so one rogue FIR by a religious zealot who thinks her/his religious sentiments hold sway over historical facts...no big deal, right? WRONG! Soon after, social media erupted with a barrage of vitriolic comments that ranged from aggressive to senseless, to unconstitutional.

From accusing the quiz show of running "Leftists propaganda", being " hijacked by Commies" and "hurting Hindus" to demanding a boycott of KBC, dissing the degrees and knowledge of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (the Father of our Constitution) and literally suggesting that copies of his written constitution should be burned netizens, including the likes of filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, had a field day displaying how far toward damnation our country's secular fabric is heading.

Check out some of the tweets below:

For crying out loud, this is LITERALLY HISTORY! Are we supposed to change history and whitewash centuries of atrocity for appeasement? This FIR means a.) History must be disregarded and b.) Implies that what happened to the underprivileged in the name of casteism was right. Moreover, the comments favouring this FIR blatantly show how regressive our society's thought process has become and how badly we are hurtling toward the death of both democracy and the secular glue that has bound us together for years.

If people can question Ambedkar's knowledge and claim that the copies of our Indian Constitution ought to be burned in retaliation to an archaic, exploitative, malicious religious scripture (be it of any faith) and are willing to BLATANTLY DISREGARD HISTORY, then imagine how far down the rabbit hole we're falling. Ironically and sadly, this wasn't the case as recently as about 7-8 years ago. Is there any way back up from this dark, diabolical rabbit hole before our society is doomed forever?
