Shipping

Even when there was no social media, people adored pairs from Indian TV soaps. The best example is Mihir and Tulsi from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhie Bahu Thi. However, shipping has reached new levels with the increase in social media. There are dedicated fan clubs for actors, and shows. The popularity of TV stars on social media is far greater than Bollywood. This truly proves that TV is the strongest medium in India. Actors too received feedback instantly gives you a sense of gratification. We have seen some iconic couples on social media like Shivaay-Anika (Ishqbaaaz), Naira-Kartik (Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata), Mishti-Abir (Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke).

Content ideas

Social media is the biggest source of feedback for writers. In fact, some writers are as known as the main leads of a show. Fans regularly convey their sentiments to them. This means they can improvise constantly. Writers have also faced immense flak when fans feel the leads have been projected badly or that a track is too juvenile.

Influencers

All the top stars of TV are active social media influencers. Brands are reaching out to them every second day. This has created different sources of earning. They are also doing small projects on social media. We saw Rashami Desai's chat show in the lockdown, and Rithvik Dhanjani-Tanuj Virwani endeavour on the YouTube. Stars like Sidharth Shukla, Shaheer Sheikh, Hina Khan, Surbhi Chandna enjoy humonguous popularity on Twitter and Instagram

Online TRPs

There is another huge thing called online TRPs. We have a few shows that do not cater to the traditional TV audience, but people watched it a lot online. Some of the examples are Beyhadh, Jamai Raja and Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka. The makers saw this and came up with new seasons on an online platform.

Critique

Gone are the days when people could look down on TV stars. We have seen the kind of backlash that some snobs have faced from the community online. There is an immense sense of unity in the TV fraternity and social media has proved it. One of the prime examples is how people stood up for Hina Khan after a top magazine editor took a dig at her. Some shows like Bigg Boss 13 also faced immense censure on social media. This has created more buzz for the industry on all levels.

So, these were five areas where the impact has been felt immensely. What do you feel about this topic? Let us know with your comments...
