Not long ago, Kangana Ranaut had described Urmila Matondkar as a "soft porn star". Urmila had said that she has no interest in engaging in a war of words with Kangana, adding that the Manikarnika actress has been given much more importance than she actually deserves. And now filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who gave Urmila one of the biggest breakthroughs in Bollywood with his 1995 superhit film Rangeela, has said that Kangana's words about Urmila did bother him. He added that Kangana's statement is in distaste with his personal feelings about Urmila.
"Yes, it bothers me, but what I am saying is that freedom of speech is fundamentally about that. If it doesn't bother somebody, what is the point of speaking? When you say you need freedom of speech, it is only when it offends somebody. Now, I say a lot of things about a lot of people. I am sure they get bothered and offended. So, when I do that, I don't have the right to talk about somebody else saying something about someone," Ram Gopal Varma told Bollywood Bubble.
He further added, "The whole point of social media, I feel, is that people express opinions. Sometimes, they use language which could be very offensive, but that is the whole point of freedom of speech. If it doesn't offend somebody, why do you need freedom? I would like to believe that it is in distaste and in the context of my personal feelings about Urmila, about her performance, about whatever she said."
The controversy arose a few months ago when, speaking to a news channel, Kangana reacted to an interview that Urmila has given. In the interview, Urmila had reportedly questioned Kangana's motive while accusing Bollywood's alleged 'drug-mafia'. Reacting to the interview, Kangana said that Urmila was "making a mockery" of her struggles. She then went on to say that Urmila was known for doing soft porn. Urmila had also called Kangana a 'Rudali' in one of her interviews.
When Urmila was asked about her remarks on Kangana, she had said, "I want to make it clear today that I did not give that interview to criticise her. It was just one of the parts of that interview and that is why I talked about her, so I feel that we should not talk about it anymore."
