Post Saif Ali Khan's Tandav garnering controversy over its objectionable content, we saw Information and Broadcasting ministry implementing some new rules and guidelines on OTT, which has made the web content creators quite cautious. Reportedly, Manoj Bajpayee, Samantha Akkieneni and Priyamani's The Family Man 2, which was supposed to stream from February 12, got postponed due to this new rule.
As per the Livemint report, a web content creator said, "All platforms are asking creators to be extremely cautious at the moment, and basically avoid depicting (social and political) realities. These are all companies running businesses and they cannot afford to have one product lead to the demise of the broader entity. Eventually, a Family Man or a Paatal Lok is only a tiny pie of Amazon's overall operations in India. Most services have worked with legal firms to point out problematic aspects for about three years but are now going through scripts with a toothcomb."
On the other hand, a senior executive a streaming platform told the publication, "Challenges arise from the fact that a lot of OTT platforms are ad-supported or free, so there will need to be developed a strong system of age verification. Also, parental locks, if desired, will have to be imposed on every single episode of a particular series, making for a cumbersome process." However, Monika Shergill, vice president, content, Netflix, showed a postive attitude and said, We're analysing the guidelines right now and have always believed in being more responsible to viewers and the society at large."
