"My turban, this band on it (gesticulating to the shimmery strap on his turban, the norm in all his looks for any occasion), is all my thought. I even got an award for being the most stylish from Elle magazine. I used to always think how it should be, how my look should appear, how my group should stand with me, how everything should be, it was all my planning. I had never thought I'd be doing all this, but over time, I put in a lot of thought into my dress, looks, and how to especially connect it to Sikh ethos. So, yeah, I ushered in all these colour into a sardaar's turban and dress, and my happiness was doubled when Bachchan saab (Amitabh Bachchan) wore the Daler Mehndi dress (in the Na Na Na Na Re song), then Anil Kapoor saab wore it for the Uff Uff Mirhe song (from Biwi No. 1), Govinda also wore it, so did Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan also wore it once, and slowly all singing stars began wearing my long gown like Himesh Reshammiya and others. So, it became like if you perform on stage you must wear a black t-shirt, jeans, shoes and long coat over it.," said Daler Mehndi when we picked his brains during a recent chat on his idiosncratic outfits.
In an exclusive interview with BollywoodLife, the undisputed king of bhangra, Daler Mehndi, opened up on how he put in considerable effort and planning in designing all his own looks, including that of his group, which eventually became a style statement for future singing stars besides being worn by a host of Bollywood moviestars.
