Pakistan-origin actor-comedian Kumail Nanjiani had recently stunned everyone with his physical transformation. He is all set to make his debut in Marvel's upcoming epic saga The Eternals. He will play Kingo, a cosmic being living on Earth. His secret identity would be of a big Bollywood star. To achieve the desired look for his character, he went on a strict diet and training and perhaps continued to stay on the course even after filming for his part. However, Kumail's new muscular look drew flak on social media.
Many people started accusing him of using steroids to beef up for his role. While some made fun of his appearance, others came out in his support reasoning that many white actors have escaped such scrutiny for their muscular transformation in the past.
"The larger question regarding #KumailNanjiani is whether Disney is condoning / encouraging/ requiring / paying for its Marvel stars to take steroids. Journos Instead of another Marvel diversity story, why not look into that?" one Twitter user wrote. Another user tweeted, "Body shaming Kumail Nanjiani for...being jacked? Is way weird. Especially since all the Chris' have done the same super-soldier program and never got any flack for it. I wonder what the difference is?"
So, actors who are non-white should just stick to playing geeks, doctors, or the side-kick? Come on guys, it's 2021. Give him credit or just mind your business. I realized men are subject to our impossible body standards too #KumailNanjiani

Did I miss the mean tweets about any of the 50 Hollywood Chris's getting ripped bc looks a lot like the shit with #KumailNanjiani is uncalled for. I'm not a fan of people messing with one of my favorite unapologetic nerds. https://t.co/mf0UGHNqAO

Earlier, in March, when Kumail had stunned the world when he unveiled his new look for The Eternals, he had revealed that Bollywood's Greek God, Hrithik Roshan, was a big inspiration in his fitness journey.
In Men's Health's April cover story, the actor said that he wanted Kingo to be Bollywood Bruce Willis and Marvel's John McClane. "I was like, 'How can a character crack wise but still have tension, and not make it fee; like you're making fun of the whole thing?'" Nanjiani had said. This time, he had a Bollywood inspiration. "I went to my trainer and said, 'I want to look like this guy'," he said. "This guy" was Hrithik.
The physical transformation wasn't easy. Nanjiani struggled with body dysmorphia after a new diet and exercise regime gave him an entirely new physique. "I don't want to discount people who genuinely have debilitating body issues. I don't have that. But I did start getting some body dysmorphia. I'd look in the mirror and I'd see my abs - and when I looked again, they would fade. I would just see the flaws," he said.
However, once he went public with his new body, Nanjiani found it really helpful to see the reaction from his fans on social media. "When I saw that reaction was when I was like, 'Okay, I clearly don't see what's actually there. It's something I'm trying to be aware of and be better at, because that's not a good way to be. You want to be easy on yourself," he said.
Director Chloe Zhao will be bringing the world of Jack Kirby-created comic, which debuted in July 1976, alive. It is about super-powered beings The Celestials and their villainous adversaries The Deviants in a war set millions of years ago. The Eternals also features Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry, Gemma Chan, and Barry Keoghan. It is expected to open on November 5, 2021.
