Tanishk Bagchi has churned out more remakes than originals and it is something the music composer always gets criticised for. Many people have accused him of setting a bad precedent in the industry with his remakes. But criticism doesn't affect him much.
In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Life, Tanishk has refuted claims of copying Naach Meri Rani tune from Punani song by American rapper 6ix9ine, the criticism he faces for doing remakes, giving background scrore for Bell Bottom and his ambition as a music composer.
Naach Meri Rani has crossed millions of views on Youtube. How does it feel?
I love when people enjoy my songs and it gives me a lot of hope to keep churning out more.
Tell us what went into the making of the song.
Honestly, I didn't know what I was doing. I was just making a song for myself. It was never a thought to create a dance number. I just came up with Naach Meri Rani hook line and then I started adding the beats.
People are accusing of copying and lifting the tune of Punani song by American rapper 6ix9ine.
My song (Naach Meri Rani) was made much before Punani came out. It's on record and in my mailbox as well. So I think they have taken my song. Naach Meri Rani has been written and composed by me and I am happy that it has worked.
What is your target audience?
My target audience is always the youth who always showcase their talent online in the form of dance. And when they do something different, it inspires me to attempt something different for them. Maybe that is the reason my songs work a lot because we relate to the youth directly.
How do you feel when people call you the poster boy of rehashes?
I really happy that I have achieved something. It gives me a feeling that my remakes are becoming a medium to reach the youth and making them go back and listen to the original songs. And it feels good that people are appreciating my music even if it is a remake. People should also know that I am writing and composing new original songs like Makhna, Ve Maahi and Bolna. And this is the only thing which is currently missing in my life.
So do you regret doing more remakes and less of originals?
I don't feel any regret because my remakes have become popular as much as my originals. But yes I just don't want to keep doing remakes, I also want to focus on composing original music. And that has already started.
I treat remakes as original songs and there's a lot of hard work that goes behind remakes than originals. remakes are a part of my success and it's not a crime.
Criticism helps me to not make mistakes in the future. I have to do something wrong to understand what is right. The more criticism I get, the more successful I will become. So I take it as a plus point for me.
You seem to have done background score for Bell Bottom. Tell us something about it.
I didn't want to do background score since it requires a lot of time and effort. It is not my cup of tea. But in Bell Bottom, it was a different thing. It was a commercial song like a background score, something similar to that of Rohit Shetty's Simmba. I have commercialised it so that it can be played in clubs and parties as well. I have found a middle way between a song and a background score. So if I get another opportunity in the future, I will definitely do it.
When music composers blame you for ruining the original songs and say you are setting a bad precedent in the industry, how do you react?
remake is something that I didn't start. And if people call me the king of remake, it is because they like my remakes and they know it will work. And it doesn't affect me if people say that I am setting a bad precedent in the music industry. This is something I have been doing it for a long time. My music director friends used to tell me that don't do remakes, you are spoiling the market. And a year after, I see they are only doing remakes. So that is hypocrisy. If they are asking me not to do it, then why the f**k are you doing it? remake is not easy, it's a very tough genre to work on.
What's your ambition as a music composer?
There's no such ambition. I just want to work more. I am not a trained musician, I am learning things as they come and I am learning from my mistakes. I just want to extend my capabilities, get into more technical stuffs and get technologically advanced. But right now, my target is to do more songs, background scores, Bollywood and Hollywood films or maybe venture into a foreign languages like Latin music.
