Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge will never be the same again! 34 loopholes that will ruin your experience of watching Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol’s eternal onscreen romance forever

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one of the most romantic films made in the history of Hindi cinema. Of course, the ones who starred in the film right from Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol to Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Satish Shah, Achala Sachdev, Himani Shivpuri, Pooja Ruparel, Parmeet Sethi and Mandira Bedi, everyone was remarkable. And their impactful performances along with Aditya Chopra's vision and the crew's fantastic technicalities, is what made this film a super-duper hit. Don't get me wrong, I am a cinephile and I love DDLJ for what it is. However, I am not the one to go fan-girling around every time. It would happen with you too when you start noticing little things from the film. I appreciate it for all the progressive thinking that they tried to imbibe back in the 90s, but some things just do not add up.

First things first

Amrish Puri's daily routine

No, not the entire sequence. But just one thing that I'd like to point out is the fact that back in 1995, that too in London, Amrish Puri lights incense stick. We just wonder whether Amrish Puri has turned off the fire alarms in his store. Because they surely would fire up the smoke detectors and it would rain down on them some day.

Kajol's diary

In the introduction scene of Kajol, we see her mother entering her room and reading the diary in which she has written a detailed description of how a guy comes in her dream. Now, this is 1995, had any girl described an unknown guy like that, some would have considered her a pyscho. Not for dreaming about the guy, but such detailed description back then despite staying in London with the progressive thoughts would have sent any mother into a frenzy attack.

Rain, no rain?

In Shah Rukh's introduction scene, we see, Raj playing football. It's raining on the field, but the roads are dry!

Anupam Kher's teachings

Raj fails in his university and his father celebrates it. It's 1995 and he pops a champagne and says that he has made him proud. He literally boasts about his elders' lack of education. He even says that not studying is the legacy of their family. Later on, he even allows his son to go on a vacation for a month or so. Which progressive father would be okay with his son not being well educated?

Kajol's dressing

Back in 1995, despite all its progressive-ness, Kajol's dressing in front of her mother and her father is different. Yes, that happened but not in 1995 in front of Indian moms. It sometimes still doesn't.

Kajol's baggage

How does Kajol have such an old-fashioned luggage? I mean she is quite fashionable, but her luggage looks like she's travelling in the 1960s.

SRK playing piano

The way Raj plays piano at first would have surely given a panic attack to every musician. And btw, did you notice, the outfit that the background dancers wear in Rukja O Dil Deewane is somewhat similar to the one that Kajol breaks in the store in Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main?

Where's the snow?

Before Zara sa jhoom loon main, they were freezing as it was snowing. Then how come next day, there was no snow outside? When Kajol breaks the store window, the store-owner could have had her arrested coz it's 1995. Next, when Kajol pulls SRK in the pool, he falls without his shoes on. Not only that, his shoes change too. Magic?

Raj's prank

Raj pranks Simran on the night she gets drunk saying that they did it. We understand the prank but the lipstick marks, he drew it or did he just made Simran kiss him while she was inebriated? Later on, the dialogue of 'ek Hindustani ladki ki izzat', don't even get me started on it.

Photograph scene

The picture which Raj tries to steal makes me wonder, who clicked it? Because Simran's friends were standing behind her and Raj's friends were behind him, so who exactly clicked this picture in a candid way.

Raj playing his mandolin

Raj plays the mandolin and only Simran hears it and is attracted to him. I would like to believe that people get entertained there easily and would gather around and appreciate the player.

Palat?

Just because she turned, does it mean that she is in love? Nonsense! Where are Raj's friends? Why is he back in that small compartment, all alone, playing the instrument?

Simran's hair

While inside the train, Simran had curly hair, when she bids adieu to Raj, she has straight hair. Ironing hair in trains, in 1995? Later, in the song Ho gaya hai tujhko, Simran gets drenched in the rain. Now a regular girl's hair would turn frizzy. But not Simran's, eh!

Simran's confession

Simran's father is standing right beside her in the hallway, any tomfool in love would have seen it and stopped. And any father-fearing girl would have been extremely cautious, because that's how Indian girls were back then.

Mr Malhotra's advice

Crashing a wedding? Way to go! Only if fathers were so cool in 1995. Also, what does O Potchi, O Koki, O Bobi, O Lola mean?

Simran calling

Raj understood that Simran loves him from the bell that she left hanging on her door. Any guy in his place would have thought she has moved to leave him behind. Sorry, I am not so filmy.

Bauiji was

He left his mother in India for 20-long-years. Itne masroof kaam mein? Also, Kuljeet is rowdy, anybody can see it. But Simran's father cannot and he will marry her off to the guy who's holding a gun.

Raj's mandolin has special powers

Simran, who had been sleep-hearing the notes from her home which seems like miles away, because she came running through forest and even crossed fields. How did Raj know that Simran would hear it and come to him? Special powers, no?

Simran's plan to elope

In those times, Raj would have agreed to Simran's plan to elope because that's what people did with a girl having a strictest father. Raj's plan was quite risky, Simran of 1995, despite living in London would not have agreed with his plan. But then again, pyaar andha hota hai na?

Raj's efforts

However romantic, no guy in 1995 would have taken so much efforts to impress the girl's father. Some still won't.

Simran and Raj's kiss

Simran is not afraid of being caught kissing, by her father, it seems. Coz she names everyone, but Bauji, to stop Raj from kissing her. Later on, Kuljeet's father who stayed in the pind, in Punjab, knows the word indigenous. He uses the word when playing chess. WOW, he is so educated.

Mehndi lagake rakhna

How can one not see the flirting between Raj and Simran? Throughout the song, they flirted, anybody could have noticed it. Later on, during Karwa Chauth Simran fakes to faint and winks at Raj. Nobody saw it despite everyone being close to her.

Mr Malhotra reaches Kuljeet's house

How did Mr Malhotra know whereabouts of Kuljeet's residence? I understand, people would give directions, but he knows only Simran's name in the whole scenario. How did he learn about Kuljeet's address? From Raj's conversation with Kuljeet's parents who want to fix their daughter's marriage with him, and he did not have a word with his father. On the other hand, from Mr Malhotra's behaviour, we come to know that he did not let his son know about his arrival.

Karwa Chauth

Raj kept a fast? Wow, we really had such guys in 1995. Raj was way too good to be real.

Raj's mother's advice

Raj's mother passed away when he was very young. How young exactly because her advice is way too deep to understand for a very young lad.

Kabootar issue

When Raj asks Bauji is there any difference between London and Punjab's Kabootars (Yes, yes pigeon, but Kabootar's effect feels nice). So, Bauji says Punjab's Kabootars know him well. We know the fact that pigeons have good memory. However, research states that their life span is just 6 years. And Bauji stayed in London for 20-long-years. Need we do the math for y'all?

Kuljeet shoots kabootar

Bauji gets angry when Kuljeet shoots a kabootar. Hello, Bauji, during his introduction scene, you clearly saw him with a gun. He is a shikari! What did you expect?

Pop's advice

Raj's father was such a daring man. In 1995, him extending his support and helping his son in eloping with her was way too unreal. Which father did this and support this at that time?

Last moments

By this time, sane lovers would have eloped. My heart is breaking, but would you take such a risk?

Magic of a photograph

The photograph was following Bauji. Yes, it was stalking Bauji till the time he saw it. The photograph has sensors and it reached Bauji in time. THANK GOD!

Bauji's anger

Bauji continuously slaps Raj because he fell in love with his daughter. Stayed amidst them, helped them with wedding preparations. But he is awara and a big fat liar. Waah Bauji waah. You are okay with Kuljeet who will shoot your own Kabootars and not Raj who was literally very progressive and loved Simran.

Raj's over-confidence

When Raj's real identity is revealed and he leaves, he reaches station without Simran. When Mr Malhotra asks him, he says, 'Bauji khud leke aayenge Simran ko'. Superb over-confidence in 1995. Raj's confidence is commendable. No, my bad, it's over-confidence.

Time travelling Mr Malhotra

I'd like to believe that Mr Malhotra has either Hermione's time turner or he's a wizard. One moment he was in the house and the next moment he saved Raj from Kuljeet's anger.

Raj's eyes

Raj's eyes held so much pain and truth that Bauji had to give-in to Raj's pleadings. Also, Raj could have been a little considerate and asked Simran to get on some other compartment. Why make the poor ladylove chase a running train, while she is in her wedding sharara?! Also, we could see the TC standing right there when Simran was running to board the train. Even he did not stop the train or do anything.

Before you all get on, let me tell you, I have nothing against the movie. I absolutely adore it and adore all the actors and appreciate their performances too. However, gone are the days when people watched movies blindly. And hence, this is all a logical conclusion that I deduced after watching Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Even if you don't agree with my pointers, let's agree to disagree?
