Sushant Singh Rajput left the mortal world on June 14, 2020. Over three months, we have read countless testimonies about his life before and after his relationship with Rhea Chakraborty. While the criminal investigation into his demise has taken a backseat, what is grabbing headlines is the expose on the alleged drug nexus in Bollywood. Recently we got the news that the name of Deepika Padukone has surfaced in the leaked drug chats. This left people shell-shocked. Besides her fabulous accomplishments as an actress, Deepika Padukone is also the Bollywood torch-bearer of mental health awareness. Just after her name came out, Kangana Ranaut tweeted, "Repeat after me, depression is a consequence of drug abuse. So called high society rich star children who claim to be classy and have a good upbringing ask their manager," MAAL HAI KYA?" It is evident that she is taking a jibe at the Padmaavat actress.
It could be a little better if Kangana Ranaut or any other celeb refrained from making mockery of depression or dismissing the issue altogether on social media platforms. It is all in the interest of the nation. As per global statistics, 7.5 per cent of Indian population suffers from depression, psychosis and substance related disorders. Every mental ailment is not related to drugs per se. The numbers are just official stats (as per WHO), the real figure could be a lot higher. One of the reasons why Indians do not manage to get timely medical intervention is lack of knowledge, and downright lack of awareness/sensitivity towards the ailing.
While Sushant Singh Rajput's unfortunate demise must be investigated from all possible angles, some empathy on part of celebs would not hurt anyone. The lockdown has been tough on mental health patients. Like cancer, mental ailment does not differentiate between the rich and poor. Of course, drugs are a menace and potentially lethal for the mentally ill or those who are genetically predisposed towards such problems. Yes, drugs cause depression and they include even pharmaceutical ones like some stimulants or beta blockers.
It would be kind if celebs just avoided using mental health terms as they take digs at others on social media. It does not serve any purpose whatsoever. Mental health is surrounded by huge misconceptions even now. Silence can be a lot more helpful than uninformed rants
