Filmy Friday: After being the voice of Salman Khan, do you know why S.P. Balasubrahmanyam suddenly stopped singing for the superstar?

The Indian film industry lost one of its golden voices last year when legendary singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam bid adieu to this world, following COVID-19-related health complications. He may be no more, but his music will indubitable live on for years to come. And among his most iconic songs, the ones he crooned for Salman Khan at the beginning of his career, which had a major role to play in the actor's path to super-stardom, will be most remembered among Bollywood fans. That being said, have you ever wondered why S.P. Balasubrahmanyam suddenly stopped singing for Salman Khan post 1994. Well, today, as part of our 'Filmy Friday' section, we will lift the veil off this relatively unknown piece of trivia on S.P. sir's birth anniversary (June 4).

Ever since Salman Khan debuted in 1989, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam began singing for him. He gave the playback from his sophomore release, the all-time blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya. Soon he came to be known as Salman's voice both in Bollywood circles and the media, and it was unconceivable to imagine a Salman Khan movie without Bala sir singing for him. Patthar Ke Phool, Love, Dil Tera Aashiq, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Andaz Apna Apna, and many more films...the list of Salman-Bala collaborations was timeless and as iconic a pair as Amitabh Bachchan-Kishore Kumar, Rishi Kapoor-Kishore Kumar, Rajesh Khanna-Kishore Kumar, Shammi Kapoor-Mohammed Rafi, Dharmendra-Mohammed Rafi, Shah Rukh Khan-Sonu Nigam, Aamir Khan-Udit Narayan and so on.

Unfortunately, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Andaz Apna Apna were the last times that S. P. Balasubrahmanyam sung playback for Salman (both released within striking distance of each other in 1994). Only Sangdil Sanam, which released a year later, has a solitary song of Bala on Salman, and that, too, was added to the film's album much later as an afterthought, which is why it's seldom counted among Bollywood archivists as the last song between the two. So, why did S. P. Balasubrahmanyam suddenly stop singing for Salman Khan is the burning question.

Well, as per sources, the superstar felt that after Andaz Apna Apna, Bala's voice had aged and didn't suit his youthful onscreen image any longer. According to said sources, Salman wished to try new, younger singers such as Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Amit Kumar, Mohammed Aziz and others, who were delivering hit songs with his contemporaries like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn and Govinda. Apparently, he also felt the musical scene in Bollywood was gradually changing, and to move with the tide, he needed younger voices as his playback singers.

So, there you have it: The reason (though officially unconfirmed) why S. P. Balasubrahmanyam suddenly stopped singing for Salman Khan post 1994.
