Rahul Dev Burman aka RD Burman, who is considered arguably the greatest music composers of the Indian film industry, gave several unforgettable tunes and melodies from 1960s to 1990s. Fondly called as Pancham Da, the singer and musician closely worked with legendary singers like Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle (his wife) and Lata Mangeshkar. While in his illustrious career RD Burman garnered several awards, accolades and recognition across the globe, you'll be surprised to know that he won his first Filmfare Best Music director trophy only in 1983 for Sanam Teri Kasam, after losing 11 times before.
Before bagging his first award for the Kamal Haasan and Reena Roy starrer, RD Burman was nominated for his composition in films like Caravan, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Aap Ki Kasam, Khel Khel Mein, Sholay, Mehbooba, Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, Kinara, Shalimar, Shaan and Love Story. Talking about Sanam Teri Kasam, the film was a musical hit and comprised of chartbusters like Nisha, Nisha, Nisha, Sheeshe Ke Gharon Mein and Kitne Bhi Tu Kar Le Sitam. The film was directed by Narendra Bedi and produced by Barkha Roy. It also featured late Kader Khan and Ranjeet in pivotal roles. The cult-classic will be completing 39-years of release tomorrow, 6th May.
Interestingly, RD Burman also won the Filmfare Best Music director the very next year (1984) for his amazing work as a composer in Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Supriya Pathak starrer Masoom. The film featured evergreen songs, including Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi, Lakdi Ka Kaatih, Huzur Is Kadar and Do Naina Or Ek Kahaani and others. The film was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur while the lyrics of the songs were penned by the legendary Gulzar. It featured Jugal Hansraj, Aradhana and Urmila Matondkar as child actors.
