Pregnancy announcements can be perceived differently by certain sections of the society. It is mostly the women who bare all the brunt of this social stereotype than men. People raise questions on one's character if a woman becomes pregnant with her partner before marriage or announces pregnancy just days after marriage. Bollywood actress Dia Mirza was recently caught in this web of social taboo when she announced her pregnancy with husband Vaibhav Rekhi one and a half months after their marriage.
After getting married on February 15, Dia went on a holiday with her Mumbai-based businessman Vaibhav and her step daughter to the Maldives. On April 1, she announced her pregnancy by sharing a photo posing with her hands on her baby bump. This is Dia's her second marriage. She was earlier married to Sahil Sangha, who was also her business partner.
But little did Dia know that she would be questioned by trolls for announcing the happiest news of her life. While some people implied her with the popular stereotype that she got pregnant before marriage, some understood it as her reason to get married quickly. Dia then had to clarify that she didn't marry because they were having a baby together. It was something she discovered while they were already planning their wedding. She also spoke about the stereotype and exercising a woman's choice to be a single parent or have a baby in a marriage. And rightly so.
Marriage should be looked as a separate commitment from pregnancy. Many young couples pressurize themselves and rush into marriage after learning about their pregnancy without giving much thought about the child's future. This forced marriage could later end if the two people are not ready to take the responsibility because children don't come with instructions.
Two individuals should get married out of love and not because of any external pressure. And if the two consenting people want to spend their lives together and still have a baby without getting married, it is perfectly alright. It is also fine if a couple wants to get married with pre-marital pregnancy just to provide stability and safety to their child.
So dear trolls, when Dia Mirza or any other woman decides to have a baby, is none of your effing problem!
