Word is coming in that legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam is planning to release both parts of his magnum opus, Ponniyin Selvan, with a short span of time. In fact, the speculation doing the rounds is that the Director is eyeing a release date with a span of just a couple of months a la Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur for his ambitious project, starring a stellar pan-India cast, including Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Trisha Krishnan, Sarathkumar, Prakash Raj, Nizhalgal Ravi, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Mohan Raman.
Sources close to Ponniyin Selvan reveal that Mani Ratnam intends to complete shooting both parts by August or September this year itself, after which all the focus will be on post-production necessary for a project of this magnitude. Furthermore, he can't keep his cast tied up as all the male actors cannot shoot for their other project owing to the thick facial hair and flowing manes required for their roles in Ponniyin Selvan.
A source close to the production stated, "The entire film shoot is planned for 140 days. The team shot for 35 days in the Krabi and Puducherry schedule and has completed another 40-day schedule since January this year which will come to end in the first week of March. Mani and his crew will be heading to Jaipur and Jaisalmer in April and will shoot for another long schedule before wrapping up the shoot with a minor schedule and patchwork. The CG work of the film will commence later and will be done round-the-clock. Both the parts are being shot together and the first part will hit the screens probably in the first quarter of 2022 and the second part will release six months later."
"They recently shot a song that started with rehearsals at five in the morning and the shoot ending at six in the evening. The song is the celebration song of Karikalan's victory and Vikram had wrapped it up without any retakes," added the source. After dedicating all the time necessary to Ponniyin Selvan's VFX and other post-production work, Mani saar and his team will eye a release date in 2022 for both parts within six months of each other, which also steer the project clear of the rush of pending releases this year, owing to the coronavirus pandemic last year.
