Republic Day 2021: Raazi, Swades, Airlift, Naya Daur – 8 Bollywood films that presented patriotism with subtlety

While we love anything that evokes love and pride for our motherland, we have seen that many Bollywood films tend to be rather OTT when it comes to patriotism. There is rampant jingoism used by some makers. On this Republic Day, here is a look at 8 films that made it different .

Swades

The 2004 film did not take off at the box office, but over the years, critics find Shah Rukh Khan's performance as Mohan Bhargava as one of the finest. It was the tale of a space engineer who uses his skills to benefit his home country.

Raazi

Meghana Gulzar gave the world one of its finest espionage films with the spirit of patriotism with Raazi. Released in 2018, the movie starred Alia Bhatt as Sehmat, a young Kashmiri girl who puts everything on stake for the nation.

Aamir

No one took much heed when Raj Kumar Gupta's Aamir hit the marquee in 2008. The story of a doctor, Aamir (Rajeev Khandelwal) who is held hostage by a terrorist unit was nail-biting and compelling. The taut direction and Rajeev's performance is still fresh in our minds.

Airlift

Raja Krishna Menon guided Akshay Kumar to one of his best performances in Airlift (2016). The film was an escape thriller and beautifully that described the journey of Ranjit Katyal (Akshay Kumar) towards being a selfless patriot. It was technically a solid product too.

Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran

Like Akshay Kumar, John Abraham too has a penchant for patriotic films. Parmanu (2018) had a good script and some fine performances.

1942: A Love Story

Set in the backdrop of the Quit India movement, 1942: A Love Story was a landmark film in terms of its music and technical finesse. Manisha Koirala was superb as Rajjo, the innocent young girl who becomes a revolutionary. The film released in 1994.

Prahaar: The Final Attack

Nana Patekar starred and directed this social drama with a strong message on patriotism. He played the role of a strict army officer who single-handedly destroys social evils. It came out in 1991.

Naya Daur

Released in 1957, Naya Daur had the conflict between man and machines as its base. It also inspired Aamir Khan's Lagaan. It starred Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala.
