Rani Mukerji on doing female-centric films; says, 'I want my body of work to tell the world my intent with my brand of cinema'

It is given that cinema impacts society deeply and it has definitely tried to contribute towards projecting girls positively on screen. One person who has brought to life several powerful girls and women on screen is Rani Mukerji and we spoke to the iconic actress about what propelled her to pick such generation-defining roles. Rani Mukerji said, "Cinema has the power to impact societal change and actors do have the power to talk to people and seed the thought of positive change through their choice of films. I have been fortunate as an artiste to get projects that had strong female protagonists and, to be honest, I have also consciously tried to seek out such projects."

The actress reveals that she had a specific plan in mind while choosing such roles and films. She added, "I wanted my body of work to loudly tell the world what my intent was with my brand of cinema, with my roles, and today, I'm happy that I chose well. I say this because I wanted to do my bit towards shifting society's stereotyped gaze towards women."

Rani's body of work is hugely inspiring and she is celebrated for having the guts to constantly choose roles that were way ahead of time. She elaborated, "Most of the characters that I have played like Rhea from Hum Tum, Shashi from Yuva, Roshni from Talaash, Suhani from Saathiya, Saamiya in Veer-Zaara, Michelle in Black, Meera in No One Killed Jessica, Shivani in Mardaani, Naina in Hichki and many more, have hopefully been instrumental in projecting women as strong, independent, forward-thinking individuals who aren't afraid to follow their hearts and do the right thing."

The versatile genius is a satiated artiste because of her choices. Rani Mukerji highlighted, "I'm proud that I have been part of such cinema that has tried to project women correctly. Films can play a big hand in altering societal notions, bring about the right change."

On National Girl Child Day, Rani feels cinema has the power to drive more positive changes that could benefit women. She concluded, "By projecting girls well, cinema has definitely tried to contribute towards showing how girls can be so much more than what society wanted them to be. I know there is still a lot of work to be done and films can contribute much, much more in triggering the right thoughts, the right conversations about equality, parity, independence of women. I have faith in my industry that we will all try to do our best in this regard."

And we're proud of you, Rani Mukerji, for the kind of work you do.
