"I had told my friend that I'll enter the industry (Bollywood) when Amit paaji (Amitabh Bachchan) will call me. Three months later, Amitabh Bachchan called and said, 'Hello, I'm Amitabh Bachchan speaking.' I felt the ground shake, relaxed myself and old him, 'Please don't call someone like this and say I'm Amitabh Bachchan speaking. I'm Daler Mehndi, so I controlled myself, someone else could get a heart attack.' I'm still such a big fan of his, whenever he comes in front, I become a 5-year-old child and told him say. He started laughing and said he wanted to work with me. Imagine, how happy I was. From my childhood, since I was in America, I wanted to be a singer, and imagine how happy I was when I heard this. He, then told me, 'I'm sending you a ticket. Fly and come to meet me the day after tomorrow.' I apologised and asked to speak to his manager. I then told his manager that I don't have time for three months to come and meet Amitabh sir as my shows are booked and packed for three months," said Daler Mehndi when asked about how he finally broke into Bollywood after making it big as a singles artist.
"Then, Bachchan saab asked, 'Where are your shows? Send me your diaries so I can see.' I replied, 'I'm not lying to you sire, I'll send your manager my diary.' I then gave him a time and date three months later, when I could meet him, and it was fixed. When we finally met, Bachchan saab requested that the hook of Dardi Rab Rab must be in Na Na Na Na Re, and by luck, six months prior to meeting Bachchan saab I had that song ready and when he requested I ad Dardi Rab Rab to it, I told him it wouldn't be a problem, in one second I can add it. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that if your intent is strong and work is honest, then no matter where you are, the world will search you and call you. And it was a golden moment for me when my name got associated with Amitabh Bachchan, he himself called me," added the legendary bhangra superstar.
In an exclusive interview with BollywoodLife, the undisputed king of bhangra, Daler Mehndi, reflected on how he transcended from being a huge name as a singles bhangra icon to breaking into Bollywood because of the one and only Amitabh Bachchan, yet had to make the megastar wait for three whole months till they finally collaborated on the chartbuster, Na Na Na Na Re, from the latter's comeback movie in 1997, Mrityudaata.
