Master box office collection: Thalapathy Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi's mass entertainer is the no. 1 movie worldwide

The Tamil film industry has done what Bollywood has been to scared to do, and it's reaping the rewards. While the Hindi film industry has been choosing the easy route and releasing even those movies tailormade for the big screen, starring big stars, robbing the core fan-base of the theatrical experience and inevitably getting bashed by the social-media junta who have completely different tastes for OTT platforms, South filmmakers from both Kollywood and Tollywood have put their money where their mouth is and trusted their loyal moviegoers. The result: Thalapathy Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi's mass entertainer has not only raked in the moolah at the domestic box office, but has brushed aside every foreign competitor, too, to emerge the no. 1 movie over the past few days at the global box office.

As per trade reports, Master grossed Rs. 155 crore worldwide over its 5-day extended opening weekend (13th-17th January), of which the domestic nett collection (pan-India) amounting to Rs. 96.40 crore, with a further Rs. 8.70 crore nett coming in from day 6 (18th January). The top circuit for the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial has undoubtedly been Tamil Nadu, from where it has grossed over Rs. 80 crore over its extended opening weekend. In fact, the Thalapathy Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi starrer has already entered the top 10 all-time grossers at the Tamil Nadu box office. Comparatively, Master has trounced big Chinese movies like A Little Red Flower and Shock Wave 2 that released during the same time frame by almost Rs. 70-100 crore (gross) respectively, cruising to the front of the queue at the worldwide box office.

Master's box office collection thus far is also testament to the super-stardom of Vijay, well and truly showing why he's earned the moniker of 'Thalapathy'. It also shows that a good, masala, family film, starring big stars, will draw the audience to cinema halls no matter what. Now, for the sake of argument, let's hypothetically consider if Master had released on an OTT platform. Would it have worked as well and received as much of love from the masses. We don't think so, especially given how mixed the reviews have been and how we've seen similar reviews transcend into widespread negativity for similar big mass Bollywood movies. A quick search on Twitter would reveal that Master was met with similar negativity during the first two days of its release, but thereon, the theatre-going audience, which cannot be bothered with social-media feedback, had the final say.

Bollywood filmmakers, are y'all taking note?
