Sons of the Soil - Jaipur Pink Panthers review: Abhishek Bachchan’s sneak peek into the players’ lives is heavy on emotions

Kabaddi has been around since a long time. Yet it was one of the most undervalued sports in India until the Pro Kabaddi League began in 2014. Nobody expected it to be such a massive hit and then began a new era in the history of sports in India. Playing Kabaddi on such a scale and the audience's reaction to the same was pretty enthralling. Though I do not follow sports as such, I do have a pretty good idea about IPL (given the scale). I occasionally heard about PKL from my friends and intrigued, I watched a few matches, but then again, did not fancy it much. But having watched Sons of the Soil, I now know how I missed a huge cultural shift in the history of India in sports for the last 7 years. But better late than never. Produced by Rishabh Sudan and Neha Khurana, directed by Alex Gale and Omkar Potdar, docu-series Sons of the Soil: Jaipur Pink Panthers is a compelling watch that engages you till the end only to leave you in a weird shock. Why? Let's find out

What's it about?

It traces the journey of Abhishek Bachchan and Bunty Walia's Jaipur Pink Panthers' team, in the 2019 Pro Kabaddi League season. From opening at the top of the league to their bitter fall, it touches upon the highs and lows of the game played by Jaipur Pink Panthers and how it affects every single entity from the top management to the players.

What's hot?

The series begins on a positive note, depicting how the team conquered their arch-nemesis, U Mumba in the opening match. They had never won an opening match against them. It gave an insight into the minds and hearts of the youngest lot of the PKL, all rural boys with pure heart and passion for Kabaddi. Abhishek Bachchan is himself letting you in on every member's journey in the league. There are times when even his emotions scale up. We get a good, if not a great, insight into how ripple effect works in such an environment, from the top management to the players.

What's not?

What begins with engaging content in the initial episodes, seems rushed towards the end. Here we are thinking that we just reached the middle of the series when we are in for a weird shock as it ends pretty soon. There are five episodes and the first three episodes roughly take up five matches. Mind you, they are covering a journey of 22 matches. Jaipur Pink Panthers had their highs and lows in the 2019 league season. While the highs were emphasised enough, I felt there was a little or relatively low emphasis on the downfall and the emotions resulting from the failures.

BL Verdict:

The series could have shed some more light on failures and the mindset of people after facing a defeat in the contact sport. It keeps you engaged and makes you feel the emotions of every individual. But before you know, it quickly falls apart just as the Jaipur Pink Panthers' fail in the league. I am going with 3 stars out of 5.
