Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah: ‘No one used to give me roles in theatre, I used to get Rs 50 per role,’ reveals Dilip Joshi

Dilip Joshi is popular for playing Jethalal in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. And so he should be. After all, the show has been running successfully for 12 years. It is also one of the longest-running shows and has completed 3000 episodes recently. Dilip started his acting career in 1989, playing the character of Ramu in the film Maine Pyar Kiya. Did you know that he has done a lot of Gujarati theatre in his career? One of the popular shows he was a part of was Bapu Tame Kamaal Kari with Sumeet Raghavan and Amit Mistry. Dilip was on Sorabh Pant's YouTube podcast recently along with Sumeet and they spoke about many important things from their life.

Talking about his initial phase, Dilip revealed that he started as a backstage artist and wasn't offered roles. He said, "I started at a backstage artist in the commercial stage. No one used to give me roles. I used to get Rs 50 per role. But the passion to keep doing theatre was there. I didn't care if it was a backstage role. The big role would come in the future but I just wanted to stick to theatre."

He went on to say that the experience of theatre is like no other. "The live reaction of audience is priceless. 800 or 1000 people clapping on laughing on your jokes at a time is priceless," he said.

The actor also said why he is no longer doing plays. "For more than 25 years, I was continuously doing Gujarati theatre. My last play was Daya bhai do dhaya which got over in 2007. In 2008, Taarak Mehta started and we shoot for 12 hours daily including Sundays. For theatre, you need a different kind of discipline. You have shows on weekends as well as weekdays. So it becomes difficult to manage both theatre and TV. I miss theatre very much," stated the actor.
