In a sigh of relief and moral victory for Kangana Ranaut and sister Rangoli Chandel, the Bombay High Court not only granted them interim protection from arrest on Tuesday, 24th November, but also questioned Mumbai Police about why they invoked a sedition complaint in the FIR filed against the sisters. This sure comes as an indication that Kanagan and Rangoli may have to face no other hassles from the cops, at least in this particular case. That being said, the High Court division bench of Justices S S Shinde and M S Karnik, who heard the case, did instruct the sisters' lawyer, Rizwan Siddiquee, that his clients need to respond to summons and record their statements before the investigating officer of Bandra Police Station on 8th January 8 12 pm to 2 pm.
Addressing the public prosecutor and police, the bench declared, "It has become routine that IPC 124-A (sedition) is added in complaint. For what? Are we treating citizens of the country like this? We understand other sections being added but why 124-A? what if anybody does not fall in line of the government? Why are police officers invoking Section IPC 124-A? Please conduct workshops for police officers. Not in this particular case but for any case."
However, the bench also recorded a statement by advocate Siddiquee, assuring that both Kangana Ranaut and Rangoli Chandel would refrain from commenting anything in connection with the FIR or it's related subject matter till further orders. Justice Shinde observed, "No doubt, there is freedom of speech, but that freedom is for other citizens too. None can claim, 'I have this absolute right.' Every citizen has fundamental rights. Those rights are subject to reasonable restrictions. While enjoying them, the rights of other persons to remain silent and to lead a peaceful life should not be violated. All citizens need to take care of this."
Kangana and Rangoli have got to be cock-a-hoop right now.
