'83: Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone's sports drama to not release during the Christmas weekend, gets pushed to 2021

While the Maharashtra government has finally announced the opening of cinema halls today with 50 per cent capacity, the makers of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone's '83, who were keen to release their film during the Christmas weekend this year, have decided to push the sports drama to 2021. Shibashish Sarkar, CEO of Reliance Entertainment told Mumbai Mirror, "Christmas is no longer a possibility as we won't be able to set up a marketing campaign within a month. Also, the overseas markets are important for both films and some of them have shut again due to second wave of Covid. We're looking at the January and March windows for '83 and Sooryavanshi."

'83 showcases the journey of Indian cricket team's heroic win in the 1983 World Cup. It was scheduled to hit screens on April 10, has been pushed ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic. The film stars Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath, Tahir Raj Bhasin as Sunil Gavaskar and others in pivotal roles.

Ranveer's wife Deepika is also playing reel-life better half in the film as she portrays the character of Romi Dev. Talking about Deepika Padukone coming on board, director Kabir Khan told us, "I think the background, the fact that her dad, Prakash Padukone was a sports superstar, that influenced her very strongly. It wasn't because Deepika had agreed to do the film that I wrote the role. Deepika liked the role, and that's why she agreed to do the film. We never initially intended it that way (Deepika being a part of the film), and as Deepika said, there's a certain support role that the family plays, and I wanted to capture that, which is why I wrote the character of Romi, and when I narrated it to Deepika, I knew it was a small role. So, I said to Deepika, 'Just listen to the film. If you like it, you'll come on board, if not, you won't come on board. She heard the film, and she knew it was about the team and the boys and Kapil. But, she just loved the script and so, she came on board."
