It took Sushant Singh Rajput's death for law agencies to crackdown the drug abuse rampant in Bollywood since decades

No one wants to take responsibility when you fail, which is perhaps the reason why Bollywood biggies have maintained a stoic silence over the ongoing drugs expose carried out by the NCB. It also raise the question of how rampant is the drug culture in the film industry. So when the time to conduct a cleanup drive arrived, instead of taking an initiative to help the authorities, the who's who of Bollywood decided to stay inside their holes.

However, this expose is not something that you should be surprised about. The use of drugs in the film industry has now been prevalent since several decades. Stars like Sanjay Dutt, Kangana Ranaut and other actors have openly come admitted to being a victim of drug abuse. And there have been many instances when Bollywood had a brush with official anti-drug agencies.

It is sad that it took the death of an actor like Sushant Singh Rajput for the Narcotics Control Bureau to conduct a clean-up. It's not like the authorities were unaware of the situation, but succumbed to public pressure to find out the reason behind the Kai Po Che actor's death. The NCB's investigation in the drugs case linked to Sushant's death has caught up with several Bollywood A-listers after some of their WhatsApp chats over banned drugs surfaced.

After WhatsApp chats, reportedly between Rhea Chakraborty and others surfaced, the probing agency is now focused on a group chat from 2017, allegedly between Deepika Padukone and her manager Karishma Prakash. The WhatsApp chats seem to have been retrieved from Jaya Saha, who has been interrogated by the NCB. Jaya was also Sushant's talent manager. Jaya, who is part of KWAN Talent Management Agency, was also a part of this WhatsApp group with Deepika and Karishma. Names of Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor and Rakul Preet Singh have also been summoned for questioning in the Bollywood drug link.

Apart from Sanjay Dutt and Kangana Ranaut, many other celebrities have also either confessed to taking drugs or have been caught with it. In 2001, Fardeen Khan was arrested by the NCB in Juhu on charges of possessing cocaine. A special court had granted the actor immunity from prosecution in February 2012 after he went through a de-addiction process. Noted actor Vijay Raaz was also detained in UAE in the year 2005 in possession of illegal drugs. Popular DJ, Aqeel, was also caught with ecstasy, found in his bag at Dubai international airport. However, he was later discharged. In fact, Ranbir Kapoor had also confessed to doing pot while shooting for his 2011 film Rockstar. "It was hard to get in the moment on stage with 300 bored junior artistes posing as a real audience. Pot made those moments feel real," he had told India Today in an interview.

Last year, Karan Johar had posted a video on Instagram of a party he hosted at home. Soon afterwards, Akali Dal MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa shared the video, alleging that top stars who were present at the party such as Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora, and Vicky Kaushal were flaunting a drugged look. He tagged the video as #UdtaBollywood, referencing the film, Udta Punjab, which was about the drug menace in the state of Punjab and which, incidentally, starred Shahid Kapoor. However, Karan was furious with the brouhaha around the alleged 'drug party', and had said that all such charges were baseless and ridiculous. But there was no investigation or formal complaint thereafter.
