Malayalam movies have become all the rage everywhere, especially since the first lockdown, so much so that people who had never watched any South movie in their life and their brother and sister have suddenly started talking about Malayalam movies. Wondering how this newfound craze for Malayalam cinema has emerged we decided to pose the question in an exclusive interview to the two best candidates to answer it: Fahadh Faasil and Director Mahesh Narayanan, who've combines for some of the industry's most acclaimed films like Take Off, C U Soon and Malik.
Opening up on why the popularity of Malayalam films have skyrocketed in the past year or so, Fahadh Faasil said, "People have time, I guess, that's one reason, they've started exploring films. And I also think, it's a cycle that goes around...there's a point when we used to only discuss Marathi films, there's a point when we used to only discuss Tamil films, so this goes around. What's important is that films actually need to travel beyond borders, and that's happening and to a great extent, such platforms (OTT) have made viewing much more convenient. So, in the next couple of year, I think, it's (Malayalam cinema) is going to be much more popular. In fact, every regional film will have a take all around the world."
Happy that Bollywood is no longer only popular everywhere, Director Mahesh Narayana added, "It's been there always (the recognition), even if you take Malayalam cinema in the 80s. The only thing is that they (Malayalam movies) didn't have that much of a reach as there was no internet or another medium for those film to reach that set of audience. So, I think, however local you set a film, that much of a reach you're getting now. And this is not happening in terms of Malayalam cinema alone, there have been times when Marathi cinema has been coming up with great ideas and content, even Tamil cinema, Kannada cinema, so, every regional language has its own voice that has to be heard. And India is a collective voice right? India is not only Bollywood, we've got lots of regional content, so that kind of a democracy should always be there, since we're living in a secular country. All those voices are getting attention...so...yeah..."
Meanwhile, both Fahadh Faasil and Director Mahesh Narayanan's next Malayalam movie together, Malik, released on Amazon Prime Video on 15th July.
