Rabindranath Tagore has inspired millions across the globe. Many of his works have been adapted into films. Today, on his 160th birth anniversary, we bring you nine Hindi film adaptations of his novels, short stories and poems that are a must-watch for any classic movie-buff or true connoisseur of his writing.
Milan (1946)
Based on Noukadubi, this one dealt with issues like caste inequality. Directed by Nitin Bose, the film starred Dilip Kumar, Mira Misra, Ranjana and Pahari Sanyal. It can be watched on YouTube.
Do Bigha Zamin (1953)
Based on Rabindranath Tagore's Bengali poem Dui Bigha Jomi, the film featured Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy in lead roles. It was considered to be one of the first Indian parallel cinema films. It can be watched on YouTube.
Ghunghat (1960)
An adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's 1906 Bengali story Noukadubi, this one starred Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar, Bina Rai, Asha Parekh, Leela Chitnis, Rajendranath, Rehman and Agha. It can be watched on YouTube.
Kabuliwala (1961)
Based on the 1892 short story Kabuliwala, by Rabindranath Tagore, it was directed by Hemen Gupta and starred Balraj Sahni, Usha Kiran, Sajjan, Sonu and Baby Farida. It's available on YouTube.
Dak Ghar (1964)
This one was based on a play called The Post Office written by Rabindranath Tagore. Directed by Zul Vellani this one starred Sachin, Mukri, AK Hangal, Sudha and Satyen Kappu among others. It also had cameo appearances by Balraj Sahni and Sharmila Tagore. It can be watched on YouTube.
Uphaar (1971)
Based on the 1893 short story Samapti (The End) by Rabindranath Tagore, this one featured Jaya Bhaduri, Swarup Dutta and Kamini Kausha. It's available on YouTube.
Lekin (1991)
Loosely based on the 1895 short story Kshudhit Pashaan Hungry Stones by Rabindranath Tagore, this one starred Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Amjad Khan, Alok Nath, and Beena Banerjee.
Bioscopewala (2017)
Directed by Deb Medhekar, it starred Danny Denzongpa and Geetanjali Thapa in lead roles. It was based on Rabindranath Tagore's 1892 short story, Kabuliwala. It can be viewed on Disney+ Hotstar.
Darbaan (2020)
This one was based on Rabindranath Tagore's 1918 short story, Khokababur Pratyabartan. It starred Sharib Hashmi, Sharad Kelkar, Rasika Dugal and Flora Saini. It can be watched on Zee5.
