A woman's body is her own and nobody's property! It is this message that resonates throughout the Lakshmi Devy's new film, "When the Music Changes". It holds a torch to the patriarchy prevalent, in different proportions, from East to West of the world. Doctor-turned-actor-turned-filmmaker Lakshmi's latest venture looks at the survivors of rape and assault in a new light and drives home its message fearlessly and inspiringly.
The film aims to remind the world that a woman is raped again (albeit symbolically) when the world around her makes her feel that she has lost her honor. Its' No wonder that "When the Music Changes" is already collecting laurels at several international film festivals across the globe, including the New Jersey Indian International Film Festival. The audiences, worldwide, seem to have reacted mind-bogglingly towards atrocities against women.
The rebellious idea behind the movie is this "Rape Kills the Honor of a Man, not a Woman." While elaborating upon the same, Lakshmi says, "Well, we all see what is happening around us. It is bad enough that we have to deal with sexual innuendos and molestation and assault from a very young age. It is bad enough that we have to live in the constant fear of being raped by known as well as unknown persons. It is bad also that the rape victims are forced to endure physical and mental torture. Add to that the shame that the society piles upon the women, in general." She says further, "A man violates a woman and it's her who is chastised. Such is the injustice meted out to the woman. She has to live with the 'shame' and that is what inspired me to make a film like this."
Talking about her two baby nieces, Lakshmi says that it is those two little ones who forced her to do something about bringing awareness regarding the matter at hand. She considers it her 'dharma' to fight against this toxic environment in which women are forced to live day in and day out. She insists that she owes it to her young nieces to question and put up a fight against the rape culture that exists in our society. "It's a long battle and I may be far away from winning it in this life time. But at least the kids will know that I have fought for them." Says Lakshmi Devy.
Apart from Lakshmi handling the direction of the movie, "When the Music Changes", the film boasts of a stellar cast and crew, including Adith Arun, Naveen George Thomas, Shreya Navile, Vignesh Shivasubramaniam as actors, Abinandhan Ramanujam as the cinematographer, Antony Gonsalves as the editor, and Achu Rajamani as the music director. However, in addition to these renowned names, there is one more person, who has brought to the table his expertise and world view, lending a new perspective and he is none other than the famous Hollywood Actor, director and producer, John Turturro, who is the Executive Producer of Lakshmi's movie.
Speaking about his experience, John said, "I must say I was very impressed. And disturbed, in a good way! To pull this off is an accomplishment, especially wearing so many different hats as director, writer and actor. It's a worthy and important subject matter which takes all shapes and forms in so many different cultures. I thought the visual elements was strong and the story telling too."
That sums up the view that the movie is going to disturb you, but, at the same time, force you to think about the issue at hand. As for the debutant director, Lakshmi Devy hopes that it will also inspire women to stand up for themselves.
