Nagin: 'There's a Spider-Man and Wonder Woman; I have a woman from folklore with the same kind of superpowers,' says producer Nikhil Dwivedi [Exclusive]

A new franchise, a trilogy to be precise, on snake-transforming women is being made in Bollywood, titled Nagin, with Shraddha Kapoor slated to play the eponymous role. However, despite Nagin (1976), Nagina (1986) and Ekta Kapoor's long-running TV show, Naagin, all being immensely successful and ubiquitously loved by viewers. However, as exciting as this sounds, we're still on the fence about today's movie-going audience (very different from the small-screen audience who isn't required to pay to watch something specific) embracing a big-screen take on serpentine-shifting beauties, and that's exactly the query we posed to producer Nikhil Dwivedi during a recent exclusive interview. However, he was quick to dispel all our doubts.

Convinced that the audience will be extremely reciprocative to Nagin on the big screen if it's presented well, Nikhil Dwivedi said, "You know how America is stumble upon a similar story. I'll tell you the one line of the story. There's this young boy in college, very unpopular, gets bullied around, goes to this photo-group exhibition, gets bitten by a spider, the next day, gets supernatural powers, jumps from one building to another, and becomes Spider-Man, and it has been going on since '65. Similarly, as there's a Spider-Man, there's Wonder Woman. Now, I have a woman, coming from traditional folklore, who has the same kind of supernatural powers, the difference is that she's a shapeshifter, she can take any form, any human form, and she can be deceitful as well. Now, tell me why is the audience not ready for this? If I am going to make a regressive story, you're going to find regression in superstition. If I make a contemporary story, and I very much like that, it's going to be accepted as a flight of fantasy. So that is how it is I see it as a superhero film, and that's how I'm going to make it and that's how I'm going to pitch it."

Coming to the vision and scale and where the movies would eventually release, he added, "We're not going to cut corners for sure. It's going to be a VFX-heavy film, it's going to be mounted on a large scale. And, oh, yes...it'll come on the big screen."

Nikhil himself has marked a successful return to acting with the web series, Scam 1992, after taking a prolonged sabbatical from facing the camera, following an inauspicious beginning, after which he went into production with the highly successful Veere Di Wedding.
