"As a society, we don't want to face our demons. So, they feel, arey yaar, phirse pakayenge, mazaa nahi aayega. The audience alone can change this, and slowly but surely the change is coming. In the past few years, many such films have come, which have been headlined by my colleagues that have done tremendously well. I feel, a movie's primary job is to entertain the audience, but, at the same time, it also has to leave you behind with a thought. Only then is cinema successful, that's a school of cinema I believe in. I hate using this word, 'women-centric', and I feel that by doing films like Durgamati, I wish to remove this concept alone it's not a woman-centric movie, it's about a character, and you're seeing that character's story, that journey, and in that journey, you'll have fun, you'll cry, there are times when you'll feel empowered, and it'll exactly happen when more women lead the show. It's not just in front of the camera, you need more women content creators, you need more women to produce films, to direct films, and me being somebody who has empowered the idea, it's to empower as many women as possible," says Bhumi Pednekar when asked about a section of the media and audience still feeling challenged when women lead the show in cinema, and what more changes should be brought about to empower women in the industry.
In an exclusive interview with BollywoodLife, Bhumi Pednekar opened up about her upcoming web film, Durgamati, its adaptation from Anushka Shetty's Telugu original, Bhaagamathie, for the Hindi audience, not watching the original again to understand "her" character better and the paradigm shift from South cinema remaking Bollywood movies from the 70s-90s to it now being the other way around. She also talked at length about choosing roles based on gut instinct, ensuring that she portrays characters for the betterment of her gender and why certain people still feel challenged when women get the limelight because they refuse to face their demons. She also showers praise for her Durgamati costar, Arshad Warsi, reflects on how people are more open to other types of content on OTT platforms and why she'll only do a web series that would entice her to take a break from her films also formed a part of this wholesome discussion.
