It's Gauri Khan's birthday today and the interior designer and film producer completes a half-century. We all know that she is the Queen of Shah Rukh Khan's heart. We all have known and heard tales of their love story as to how the then-young Shah Rukh had followed Gauri to Mumbai. But did you know, for his love, he was threatened at a gunpoint by none other than Gauri's brother? Yes, you read that right. However, facing the barrel of the gun did not scare him and he did not even waver in front of it.
In the book called King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema, journalist and film critic, Anupama Chopra had shared some scoop of their love story and the obstacles they faced before tying the knot in 1991. That reminds us, their anniversary is also inching closer and they would complete 29 years of togetherness. Coming back to the story, Anupama in the book said that Shah Rukh was a popular name by then and had established himself as an actor with his stint in Indian Television show Fauji.
Gauri's parents were against their relationship. Her father, Ramesh Chibba had reservations about his profession more than the actor's religion. It is said that he had a difference when he met film stars. He considered the industry to be a bed of vice. Gauri's mother, Savita even consulted an astrologer to break their pairing even though she loved watching Shah Rukh on screen.
Gauri's brother, Vikrant objected to her choice of man as well. A snippet from the book read, "Vikrant had a reputation of being a goonda (thug). He threatened Shah Rukh with a gun, but the posturing didn't scare his sister's suitor." We wonder what would be going through that young Shah Rukh's mind when he faced the gun. We certainly do praise his guts.
