Eminent fashion designer Sharbari Dutta was found dead late Thursday night, 17th September, in the bathroom of her residence in Broad Street, Kolkata. She was 63 years old and used to live alone. She was not reachable via her phone since Thursday morning, claimed her family. Though the police has ruled out suicide or any case of foul play, and the doctors deemed her demise as a result of a severe stroke, her cadaver has still been sent for a post-mortem examination since she was found lying dead in her bathroom, reveals family sources.
"I had last seen my mother on Wednesday (16th September). I didn't see her throughout Thursday. I thought she was busy and had gone out for work. It is nothing unusual. Both of us remain so busy that we don't get to meet every day," said Amalin Datta, Sharbari's son, a fashion designer himself..
Sharbari Dutta was the daughter of noted Bengali poet Ajit Dutta. She quickly rose through the ranks of the fashion world after passing out from designer college, making her mark especially in men's ethnic wear. Her label became popular for its vibrant colours, and a unique amalgamation between modern and traditional fabrics. High-profile names in the fashion world also attribute the change in notion toward men's sartorial choices to her. Later, Sharbari also dabbled in women's wear and set up her own brand, Shunyaa, with outlets in Kolkata.
Popular names from Bengal's entertainment industry, including singers Parama Banerjee and Ujjaini Mukherjee, actors Srabonty Chatterjee, Rukmini Moitra and Pujarini Ghosh, theatre director Debesh Chatterjee and others condoled her death on social media. She was quite well known among social circles in Bengal's entertainment fraternity.
RIP, Sharbari Dutta.
